Ceniamo a Copacabana,
modello all you can eat in cui torniamo ogni volta che siamo ad Enschede.
Dopodiché partiamo in macchina
ore.
Arriviamo a casa
July 2 the
event in Milan finished and I took a
flight to Amsterdam.
I arrived in Amsterdam
at 9.45 pm. Then, I had two trains to catch to get to Enschede,
the little city where my sister lives. I didn’t miss the first connection under
the wire: like, I jumped on the train and the doors closed behind me, and the
train left.
For the second connection, I had more time, as much as
4 minutes. I made it to Enschede, where Anna and her boyfriend, Roy, came to
pick me up.
The day after we went for a walk in Enschede, where I have been two years ago. We bought the
last things and made all the preparations for Anna’s graduation ceremony. We dined at Copacabana, where we all
ordered a mixed grill, typical Dutch.
The second day, my parents, Albertino, my aunt and I
went to Amsterdam to visit the Rijks Museum, to have French fries and to have a walk around the city center. We came
back and we had an amazing Turkish
dinner prepared by Merve’s (Anna’s flatmate) mom waiting for us.
The third day was the great day: Anna’s graduation day. It began with the thesis discussion, followed by the grades announcement. In the Dutch system, grades on exams go from 1
to 10, so does the graduation grade. To graduate with honors, cum laude, Anna
needed at least 8.5 in her thesis. She got a 9. She graduated with honors, after three years taking
part into the Program of Honor. She has
also been awarded for the best thesis of
her course of study.
After all the photo ops and a happy hour offered by
the University, we went to have dinner at La
Cubanita, an all you can eat tapas restaurant where we come back every time
we go to Enschede.
Our last day, we woke up taking it easy, and helped Anna to pack: basically, throw
all her life of the past three years in a couple of suitcases and a few boxes. Then,
we left by car headed to Cologne, where
we would have had our flight the same night. Not until we enjoyed a little the city: a visit to the city center and to the Dome,
Gothic masterpiece of elevate greatness and majesty, also given by its
significant height, that makes it the third highest Cathedral in the world.
The romantic yet bleak
atmosphere, typical of Gothic monuments, is enhanced by the
storm hitting the city just as we arrived at the Dome. We stayed inside a half
hour to wait until it stopped raining a little bit, and when we went out the
gloomy air had turned into an ash sky. We walked to downtown, escorted by a
rain that was falling lightly on the city while the lights were going out.
At 7 pm we
picked up the car from the parking
lot, at 8 pm we were at the airport. The car rental guy arrived at 8.45
pm. Our flight was supposed to
be at 10.15 pm, if it wasn’t 2 hours
late.
We arrived at home at 3 am, with not enough energy even
for walking up the stairs.
