English Version Below -
E a me chiedono: "Ma tu che sei sempre in giro, dove vai a Capodanno?". Beh, a casa. A lavorare.
This is the time of the year when everyone asks you: "So, what are your plans for New Year's Eve?". And to me, they ask: "You are always traveling, where are you spending New Year's Eve?" Well, at home. Working.
Said it in this way it seems a thing I am complaining about, well, no! Ok, I was almost broke and I needed the money, and they usually pay more for NYE, but I also knew I would have had fun, and without all the stress due to plan a trip, and without spending 200-300 euros for a few days.
For some reason, we all feel compelled to have fun on New Year's Eve. To start the year in the best way, ready to make a New Year's resolutions list, never realistic, and then never maintained.
And I am not gonna write New Year's resolutions, I am not planning to start a diet I will never start, a gym subscription I won't do, a "spend less money" I will not honor. And for me, New Year's Eve is a night like all the others.
Because of this, around two months ago, I decided I would have worked as waitress in the restaurant where I was working a couple of years ago. Benny, my roommate in Barcelona, and I have known each other there. One night two years ago our streets came together, and changed our paths forever. We decided almost together to come to Barcelona, and although we live together, although we always go out together and basically spend 20 hours per day together, we still haven't got bored of each other.
And one night, before going to bed, in one of those moments when we get crazy due to exhaustion and we start to tell stupid things, we said that to save some money we could have gone to the place we were working to work when we would have gone back for Christmas. Then, thinking about it, it wasn't such a bad idea, and we got in contact with our former bosses to ask if they needed two people more to work on New Year's Eve.
We started to work at 7, and we finished at 4. But it hasn't been a super tiring night at all: New Year's Eve is always an exception; at midnight it starts the party, and the priority is to engage people more than to take care of the service in all details, to make them have fun and to make it a memorable night, so that everything is perfect.
In the end, begun the year in the best way possible: dancing, singing and laughing, a lot. And doing a job that has made me happy, which, ultimately, is the goal of life, not only of New Year's Eve.
