We arrived in Phnom Penh at 4,20 pm, with an 11,55 am flight from Chiang
Mai, with a layover in Bangkok.
The first impression, also very influenced by what we’ve heard by the
thousand recommendations we’ve been given, is of an unsafe city, where the
first thing we had been told was to wear the bag as a shoulder bag to avoid
anyone on a motorbike would tear it off, and where crossing the street is a
challenge for the best slalom specialist.
Probably also because we arrived at night, and of course the feeling of
danger and confusion is exaggerated, the Cambodian capital is definitely not a
quite city.
The next day, light program: Killing Fields and Holocaust Museum. It’s a
strong experience, of a high intensity, which leaves us unable to talk for a
while.
It’s incredible to think that less than 40 years ago a quarter of the population was killed to follow the plans of a nut. But the most terrifying thing is that things like this have always happened, still happen today and will happen again, because any awareness and historic consciousness will never be enough to uproot the evil from the world.

But the most terrifying thing is that things like this have always happened, still happen today and will happen again, because any awareness and historic consciousness will never be enough to uproot the evil from the world.
Being able to see the pictures, the descriptions and the torture tools,
together with an audio guide providing all the detailed information related to
any element, contributes to give an even more real and true dimension to what,
until before, we only knew in part.
At night, a walk on the Mekong River made us realize how Cambodia is growing,
and at full speed, but how is still recovering from a period that destroyed it
in any possible way, where the poverty rate is still high, and where some wounds are
still too fresh or too deep to heal.
For our third day in Phnom Penh we thought about other two musts: The
Royal Palace and the National Museum.
The Royal Palace is a set of structures designated to various purposes, one of the main building is the Silver Pagoda, a temple with a fully-silver floor (which is almost entirely covered by carpets not be damaged) where the Emerald Buddha is kept.
It reminds me the Grand Palace in Bangkok, and in general Thai temples, with the stupas, the shining gold roofs and the altars with Buddha.

5 minutes far, there is the National Museum, a beautiful museum where
anything is kept: from Angkor time statues to contemporary art pieces, from
evidences and videos about Cambodian involvement to the WW2, to sculptures and
items from every age. Everything inserted in a structure recalling a temple,
with a garden inside which is the most peaceful place you could ever picture.
We ended our day with a typical Cambodian dinner, followed by a local music
and dance performance, which reflected all the gracefulness, the calm and the
elegance of the culture, in contrast with the noise, the traffic and the chaos
of the city.
