Da quando ho iniziato a parlare alle persone di questo progetto, tutti mi hanno riempito di domande...e sono quasi sempre le stesse! Così ho deciso di raccogliere e rispondere ad alcune di queste domande qui per voi, in modo tale da chiarire le idee un pò a tutti! Se avete altre domande, non esitate a scrivermi, le risposte saranno aggiunte a questo post.

Since when I started talking to people about this project, everyone asked a lot of questions...and they are almost the same every time! So I decided to put together a list of frequently asked questions.

Perchè hai deciso di fare la ragazza alla pari?

Ho scelto di essere un'au pair, prima di tutto perchè volevo viaggiare. E' sempre stata la prima motivazione. Amo scoprire nuovi posti, nuovi paesi, culture, tradizioni, conoscere persone dal mondo intero. Un'esperienza alla pari ti permette di viaggiare e visitare nuove città a costo quasi zero, ti permette di avere un tetto sopra la testa (più o meno sicuro, dipende dalle condizioni), qualcosa da mangiare e una discreta quantità di denaro da poter spendere come vuoi. Inoltre amo i bambini, condizione necessaria per poter fare l'au pair, tenete conto che dovrete stare a contatto con i bambini per l'80% del vostro tempo. Ed anche se lavorate solo 30 ore a settimana, vivete nella stessa casa, li avrete sempre intorno.

Come se non bastasse, non sapevo cosa fare della mia vita (come ho già detto in qualche post precedente). Sono all'ultimo anno delle superiori, e non so cosa voglio fare dopo. Piuttosto che perdere un anno a cercare lavoro (che non c'è) o iscrivendomi ad un'università che non mi piace, ho preferito buttarmi in quest'esperienza!

Why did you decide to be an au pair?
I chose to be an au pair because, first of all, I wanted to travel. It's always been my first motivation. I love to discover new places, new cultures, traditions, get to know people from all over the world. An au pair experience allows you to have a roof over your head (more or less safe, depending on the conditions), something to eat and a little bit of money to spend however you prefer. Moreover I love children, necessary condition to be able to become an au pair, since you will be in contact with children 80% of the time. And even if you work 30 hours a week, you live in the same house, you will always have them around. 
If that wasn't enough, I had no idea about what to do with my life (as I already mentioned before). I'm in my last year of high school and I don't know what to do next. Not to lose one year looking for a job or signing up for a university that I don't like, I decided to jump into this opportunity!

Perchè gli Stati Uniti?

E' da quando sono bambina che sogno di andare negli Stati Uniti. Sono un'appassionata di telefilm, il mio primo amore è stato the o.c. e da allora non ho più smesso. Qualunque tipo, genere di telefilm rigorosamente americano io l'ho visto (o quasi!). Crescendo, ogni anno che passava, io desideravo di poter visitare quei paesi dove erano ambientati i miei telefilm preferiti, desideravo frequentare le scuole superiori in america, nelle tipiche high school americane con gli armadietti e le mense con i vassoi. Purtroppo (o per fortuna) sono nata in Italia, e così mi devo accontentare dei bar della scuola che puzzano di fritto e i banchi e le sedie che al minimo colpo si spezzano a metà. Cooomunque, ho scelto gli Stati Uniti perchè in questo modo ho l'opportunità di vivere come una vera americana per un anno, conoscere le loro tradizioni, la loro cultura, i loro modi di fare, di vivere..conoscere l'america!

Why the Unites States?
Since I was a little girl I've been dreaming about going to the United States. I'm a huge fan of tv series, my first love being The O.C. and I haven't stopped ever since. I've watched every kind, genre of american tv series (or almost). Growing up, time was passing by and I was wishing every year more to visit those places where my favorite tv series were located, I wanted to go to high school in America, in a typical American school with the lockers and the cafeterias with trays. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was born in Italy, and so I have to settle for the bars in my high school that stinks of fried food and the desks and chairs that break very easily. Anyyyyyway, I chose the United States cause this way I have the opportunity to live with a real American family for a year, get to know their traditions, their culture, their ways of living...meet America!

Posso scegliere io in che città andare?

Teoricamente, sì. Per quanto riguarda gli Stati Uniti, tramite l'agenzia entri in contatto con tante famiglie, e la scelta deve essere reciproca. Nel senso che una famiglia può scegliere te, ma tu puoi rifiutarla...stessa cosa per la situazione opposta, tu puoi volere assolutamente una famiglia, ma loro potrebbero scegliere qualcun'altro! Comunque, se voi volete andare assolutamente in California e se siete fortunati, potete trovare una famiglia in California che vorrebbe voi. Lo stesso vale per qualunque altro stato/paese/città degli Stati Uniti.

Ma ricordate: mai scegliere una famiglia in base alla città di provenienza! E' l'errore più frequente tra le ragazze alla pari! La cosa più intelligente è scegliere la famiglia, non la città. Dovrete vivere con quella famiglia per un anno intero, se non di più (e se non scappate prima), per questo motivo vi consiglio di scegliere una famiglia solo se è quella giusta per voi, se vi piacciono le età dei bambini, se i genitori vi sembrano simpatici, se vi piace il loro modo di vivere e se avete interessi in comune! Non fate l'errore di basare la vostra scelta sulla città, potreste pentirvene in futuro!

Can I choose in which city to go to?
Theoretically, yes. As far as the US, through the agency you get in contact with many host families, and the choice must be reciprocal. Which means that a family can choose you, but you can turn them down...the same goes for the other way around, you might want a family, but they could go with someone else! Anyway, if you absolutely want to go to California and if you are lucky, you can find a family there that is interested in you. Same goes for every other state/country/city.
But remember: never choose a family depending on the city! It's the most common mistake between au pairs! The most intelligent thing to do is choosing the family, not the city. You will have to live with this family for an entire year, if not more (and if you don't run away sooner), for this reason I advise you to pick a family only if it is the right one for you, if you like the age of the kids, if the parents seem nice, if you like their lifestyle and if you have common interests.
Don't make the mistake of basing your decision on the city, you might regret it later on!

Se mi trovo male con la host-family, posso tornare a casa?

Ovviamente si, non vi legano di certo in cantina e obbligano a lavorare per loro contro il vostro volere! Potete partire e tornare a casa in ogni momento, se non vi trovate bene con la famiglia, se succede un imprevisto a casa, se vi manca il vostro ragazzo...in qualunque caso siete liberi di ripartire! Ma, se il motivo che vi spinge a tornare a casa è che non state bene con la vostra host-family, c'è un rimedio migliore: il re-match! Cos'è? In pratica, se dopo un mese (se non sbaglio) o più che abitate con la vostra famiglia vi rendete conto che non è quella giusta per voi, potete chiedere di cambiare famiglia e ricominciate così la ricerca di una nuova famiglia (e di conseguenza nuova casa, nuovo stato ecc..)

If I don't like the host family, can I come home?
Of course, they won't lock you up in the basement and force you to work for them against your will! You can go back home anytime, if you don't fit with the family, if something happens at home, if you miss your boyfriend...in any case you are free to go! But, if the reason why you want to go back home it's because you don't like your host family, there is a better solution: re-matching! What is it? If after a month or more (if I'm not wrong) that you live with your host family you realize that it's not the right one for you, you can ask to change host family and start the search once again for a new family (and it could then be new house, new state etc..)

Posso seguire dei corsi durante il mio soggiorno come au pair?
Per quanto riguarda gli Stati Uniti dovete seguire dei corsi. Il governo degli Stati Uniti pretende che, per completare il programma alla pari, l'au pair segua dei corsi all'università per un totale di 6 crediti annuali. Non sono molti, in realtà seguendo alcuni tipi di corsi avrete in totale 6 crediti, quindi ne basterebbe uno solo. Potete seguire corsi su ogni tipo di argomento, dalla storia degli USA, all'economia, alla fotografia. Ovviamente, è consigliato, per chi non è molto bravo in inglese, seguire dei corsi sulla lingua, per migliorare la comunicazione e la comprensione. Inoltre riceverete una borsa di studio dalla famiglia di 500$ per poter seguire i corsi che volete. Per quanto riguarda altri paesi nell'UE, penso che siate liberi di seguire tutti i corsi che volete nelle ore in cui non lavorate.

Can I follow courses while I'm an au pair in the US?
As far as the United States, you have to follow courses. The US government requires that, in order to complete the au pair program, the au pair follows courses at university for a total of 6 credits in a year. They are not many, with some course you directly get 6 credits, so one could be enough. You can follow whatever course you'd like on whichever topic you prefer, such as American history, economy, photography etc. Of course, it's advised for those whose english is not that good, to take english courses, to improve communication and comprehension. Moreover, you will get a scholarship from your host family of 500$ in order to follow the course you want. As far as other countries in the European Union, I believe you are free to follow whatever course you want when you are free from work.

E' richiesto un livello di inglese particolarmente alto?
No. Quando vi iscriverete all'agenzia, vi verrà richiesta un'intervista in inglese, ma le domande saranno molto semplici e si sa che non siamo madrelingua, quindi capiranno eventuali errori. Non vi preoccupate, la cosa migliore è essere spontanei e tranquilli.
In un secondo tempo, quando avrete i primi contatti con la famiglia, dovrete parlare in inglese, sia via email che tramite videochiamate con skype. Lì sarà forse un pò più difficile, in quanto dovrete parlare tramite un computer con delle persone il cui accento potrebbe rendere difficile la comprensione. Anche in questo caso, il trucco è stare tranquilli, magari prepararvi in precedenza domande e risposte alle domande più frequenti. Se non vi sentite sicuri, potete fare alcune cose per migliorare la lingua, come per esempio seguire corsi, ascoltare canzoni, guardare film/telefilm in lingua, leggere, parlare...avete l'imbarazzo della scelta!

Is a high level of English required?
No. When you sign up with the agency, you will be asked for an interview in English, but the questions will be very easy and they know we are not mother-tongues, so they will understand if you make mistakes. Don't worry, the best thing is to be spontaneous and relaxed.
In a second moment, when you have your first contacts with host families, you will have to speak english, both via email and Skype calls. Maybe there will be a little harder, since you will have to talk through a computer with people whose accent might make things difficult to understand. Also in this case, the trick is to be relaxed, maybe get some questions and answers ready.
If you don't feel confident about your English skills, you could do a couple of things to improve it, such as taking a course, listen to music, watching movies/tv series, read, talk...you have so many options!

Bisogna pagare delle tasse? Quando? Quanto?

Allora si, come residente negli States dovrete pagare delle tasse. Vi spiegerà tutto la vostra area director, comunque a me é stato detto di mettere da parte circa 12$ per ogni stipendio settimanale. Entro il 15 aprile dovete dichiarare il reddito e pagare le tasse dell'anno precedente. Per quanto riguarda me, per esempio, entro il 15 aprile 2014 dovró dichiarare quanto ho guadagnato da luglio al 31 dicembre e pagare le tasse. Comunque c'è un modulo da compilare con tutti i dati per capire quanto dovrai pagare.

Do we have to pay taxes? When? How much?
Yes, as a working resident of the US you will need to pay taxes. Your area director will explain everything, anyway I was told to put aside around 12$ for every weekly salary. By the 15 of April you will have to declare your income and pay the taxes of the previous year. As far as me, for example, by the 15th of April 2014 I will have to declare how much I earned from July 2013 until December 2013 and pay taxes on it. Anyhow, there is a form to fill in to figure out how much you have to pay.

How does it work with mobile phones? Do you have an American phone? A special offer/plan?
As far as the cellphone, my host family gave me an iPhone with an American sim card with unlimited texts and data and an amount of free calls and they are paying for it. However, I met some au pairs whose families gave them an old phone or a phone without internet connection, so if I were you, I would ask your host family in case of doubts.

How do you keep in contact with friends and family at home?
As far as contacts with Italy, I use a lot whatsapp (having internet on my phone, it's easy) and Facebook for some other friends, and of course Skype and FaceTime.
Internet changed au pairs' lives, think about when people communicated with letters, a tragedy!
