Back home for Christmas

English Version Below -

Last Friday night I came back home to spend Christmas time, after almost 2 months in Brussels.

My flight landed around 8:30 pm, a little late, as I expected, flying with RyanAir. I arrived at home, popping in at my aunt's place for a few moments to say hi. Then I got ready and went out to celebrate Benny's (my roommate in Barcelona, whom I have already talked about in several posts) graduation.
We went to Tocqueville, in Corso Como, the best nightlife-area of Milan.

The day after was the 23: we planned a Christmas dinner with my friends. I spent the day making preparations: we decided that everyone would have brought something to eat/drink and I decided to bring a baked pasta, some wine and mascarpone cream, a typical Italian Christmas dessert (basically the cream of Tiramisu, that during Christmas time we eat with Pandoro).
We all met at one of my friends' place: who is coming back home from abroad, who is finally on holiday, who is coming back to the "company" after years. And they are always the same, my long-standing friends. And it's always nice to see them again.

On Christmas Eve, the preparations became more intense: among shrimps with cocktail sauce, last presents to buy and tables to set.
As every year, we celebrated with my aunt Luci, my father's sister, my aunt's sister-in-law, my cousins and my aunt's boyfriend. And this year, also my cousin's girlfriend.
After midnight, also my aunt Teresa, another of my father's sisters, joined us. After dinner we started playing Trivial Pursuit, according to tradition.
This year, Christmas Eve finished relatively early (around 3:00 am) because my cousin felt sick, probably because of the 6 hours tattoo he got that morning.

Christmas morning is one of my favorite moments of the year. We took it slowly, we got up, we opened the presents and we started to prepare lunch. After lunch, as happens every year, everyone fell asleep. Around 6:00 pm, first life signs. So we decided, as every year, to put one of the Christmas movies offered by Sky. At 9:00 pm I left to go to Aurora's -one of my best friends- place, where we met up with all my friends to exchange wishes and to take advantage of the few days we could spend together. And to play Trivial (again).

The 26, Boxing Day, we had lunch at our place with my aunt Teresa (again), my uncle Marco's -my mother's brother- family, and my aunt Cristina - my mother's daughter-in-law -with her boyfriend, my cousin and her boyfriend. Another exaggerated lunch: several starters, first courses, main courses. Nothing could really fit into my stomach anymore. As soon as we finished lunch (at 4:00 pm) other family friends and relatives joined us to play Tombola and eat Pandoro. At 9:00 pm they ordered pizza, which I firmly refused being still full from lunch. Then we started to play "Lupus in Tabula", a game we used to play everyday last summer.
And those are the moments I love the most, and the reason why I come back home every Christmas: the moments spent with my family and with my friends, with no real need to have something to do or an excuse to meet, but where it's "just to meet up".

The 27 is "the calm after the storm". As soon as I woke up, my friend Denny came to see me before leaving to a mountain site to spend New Year's Eve. After she left, I took advantage of the calm to watch what is, according to me, the best Italian show ever: Gomorra.
Early afternoon my mum, my sister and I went to buy some stuff. Then I headed for Benny's place for a coffe and a chat. The chat we couldn't really have on Friday.
At 7:30 pm she went to work and I went back home to dine, and to watch Gomorra. Same program planned for the day after, when basically that's the only thing I had been doing for the all day: packing and Gomorra (I know I am quite addicted).
At night, though, I left with my friends for a last goodbye. Who knows how many months will pass before we will meet all together again. We all should make every time a Power Point presentation to update the others about the changes in our lives.

Usually holidays are done to get some rest, but I believe I left more tired than when I had arrived.
The following day was the day of my departure. My plan was: "finish packing, make sure you got everything", of course I missed this part, and missed some stuff . I also set myself the goal to watch the final episode of Gomorra, which, of course, I couldn't do.

My 4:00 pm flight brought me to Brussels again, to try to get some rest the last days before going back to work. With no "distraction". No family, no friends, no extra food.
But feel free to say whatever you want, but to me there is nothing like them; and nothing as a Christmas like this.

Last week at the beach

English Version Below -

You are never happy when you come back from vacation. The break from the routine, from work, from everyday life ends. The short but intense escape from reality finishes. It can last a week or a month, but it finishes. The long-awaited break from boredom, from normality finishes.

But coming back from Marina di Camerota is different. Coming back from Marina di Camerota is leaving life-lasting memories. Leaving a month of magical sea and mozzarella di bufala you can't describe in words. Volleyball matches lasting until there's light and then baths when light is gone; long swims to the buoy and gatherings of people of all ages; matches to "the game of wolves" and "coffee creams" under the beach umbrella. It's leaving something you cannot find anywhere else, for sentimental value, for the repeating of a dynamic that lasts since forever but that changes every time.

It's not just like going back from holidays. It's not like whatever summer destination. It's the place of the heart. It's where you feel you've grown up, where you spent 80%, if not more, of your holidays, and you still haven't had enough of. It's where you know you can go back whenever you want, and where you know you will always find everything waiting for you.

Marina di Camerota is where you find the "Mulino Bianco Family", where you create a community turning around those small daily routines and those habits that no one wants to leave. Where your acquaintance from the beach seems your best friend in life, where we all become children. And as when we were 10, we don't want to leave. And now that we are a little older, and that we have a little more say in the matter, we tried to do our best to stay even only two days more.

In the end, we stayed for 5 days in Rofrano, where we had been going back and forth every day in order to spend the day at the beach. We should have stayed until August 8th, at the end we stayed until the 12th. We tried to convince my father and stay at least until August 15th (Assumption day), but it was impossible. It was already quite hard to convince him to spend only 4 days more, but finally 4 against one, we made it. And it was worthy, because who knows when we will come back again to our place of the heart?

Third week at the beach

English Version Below -

Domenica è sempre domenica, vacanza o no. La differenza è che in vacanza ogni giorno è domenica.

When you're on holiday, you lose a bit track of the days. Actually I follow my own calendar, marked by the day we arrived: Saturday is the new Monday.

Our third week of holidays started with heavy seas, which doesn't happen that often there, but when it does, it usually lasts for 3/4 days.
Saturday night, as we rarely do, we went to take a walk in a village nearby. We decided to go to Palinuro, 10 minutes far from our holiday village, to do something different and to go for some shopping. Palinuro has two necessary stops: THE bookstore, where we have often found interesting deals, and THE crepe place, no explanation required.

Sunday is always Sunday, holiday or not. The difference is that, on holiday, every day is a Sunday. Beach and sea all day long, then dinner out: seafood dinner. What else could I ask for?

On Monday, the day passed, as every day, among swims and beach reading, homework with the kids and "Uno" matches, sleeps under the beach umbrella and a beautiful sunset.
For dinner, we went to the "resort's" restaurant, where we all ordered a pizza. You can't find it in many places in the world as good as in Campania (the region where we are, and where pizza is actually born). Monday was also the departure day for most of our group. It's always sad when holidays end, and even for those who stay, you always have the impression that anyways, since there on, it will not be the same.

Tuesday, the sea was a millpond, and the water was that clean that we had the impression to be in a swimming pool, except for the smell of nature, instead of chlorine. I benefited all the situation and had lunch under the beach umbrella. Then around 5 pm I went home and profited from the new calm to sleep. It's weird to be alone all of a sudden: it's now my family and Albertino, but that same night also his parents would have joined us. Well, loneliness didn't last so long.

Wednesday, boat trip: a tour of the several sea caves and beaches of Marina di Camerota. We already know them quite well, but it's always nice to enjoy some beauties of nature. To be able to swim in the cleanest water, to face postcard-landscapes, to visit some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy: you never get used to some sceneries.

Thursday another day exclusively dedicated to the sea. But to me, a pure beach lover, nothing else is needed. If then the lifesaver brings me food under the beach umbrella, I could spend the all day on the beach lounger without even getting up. At night, my aunt planned a dinner at the beach bar/restaurant (so yes, not only I spent my days, but even my nights at the beach). Traditional entrees of the territory, which are some of the dishes I grew up with, and fried fish and shellfish. Everything amazing, and with another dream view.

Friday was one of our last days in Camerota. Then, we would have gone to Rofrano, my father's village, where we would have stayed for a couple of days to figure out some stuff.
Since when we were kids, we have never liked Rofrano. We have always considered it a boring place where we were spending a month without anything to do.
And this year, it would be the place where we would have to stay to work some bureaucratic issues out. Let's see if with age things change.

Sydney Itinerary

Day one:

Day two:

Day three:

“Sydney is rather like an arrogant lover. When it rains it can deny you its love and you can find it hard to relate to. It's not a place that's built to be rainy or cold. But when the sun comes out, it bats its eyelids, it's glamorous, beautiful, attractive, smart, and it's very hard to get away from its magnetic pull.”

Here what was, more or less, my itinerary in Sydney, which I think is the best way to visit main attractions in Sydney in the less time possible.

Day one:

Begin your Sydney tour with the Museum of Contemporary Art; free entry for one of the best museums I have visited lately, extremely various, complete and inspiring, made even more interesting by a temporary photographic gallery.

A 10 minutes’ walk will get you to the Harbour Bridge, to climb for an unique experience and to enjoy an incredible view on the Bay. Then, head to the Darling Harbour for a dinner on the ocean (we also had the chance to enjoy the light shows displayed by the Vivid Sydney) to relax in one of the more touristic, but also more vibrant and culturally active areas of the city.

End your first day with a night out in one of Sydney’s clubs, we went to the Marquee – The Star (after a half-an-hour spent at the Casino), which is, indeed, in the beautiful building Star, on top of the Casino.

Day two:

Start your second day exploring the green of the Botanic Gardens, a huge park with a massive diversity of plants, where you can take part into a free guided tour leaving every day from the Visitor Centre.

With a short walk you can head to theArt Gallery of New South Wales, which includes a free permanent gallery and paid temporary exhibitions. The permanent gallery includes masterpieces from different age, from various trends and diverse artists, from Picasso to the impressionists, from Renaissance Italian art to Aboriginal art, from porcelain to contemporary art, constituting a unique collection.

From there a 10 minutes’ walk will get you to Woolloomooloo, a small, picturesque wharf, perfect to enjoy a lunch in the calm of one of the few restaurants on the seaside.

With the belly full and at late afternoon, it comes the perfect moment to move over to the CBD to take advantage of the time and enjoy the day, sunset and night lights on the Opera House and on the Harbour Bridge. Take your time, relax and benefit the view. We chilled there for a couple of hours, also to watch the lightshow on the Opera House and the CBD enlightening of thousands of colors, with a glass of wine and chips in front.. what more can you ask for? After an happy hour, go on in a bar in the center, don’t miss the O-Bar, on the top of the Australia Square Tower, a turning bar allowing a literally 360° view on the whole city.

Day three:

Whether you went to bed late (more than likely) or you went to bed at 9 pm, head to the Darling Harbour for an Australian-style breakfast with a view. When you travel, don’t stress yourselves out making a thousand plans, trying to do it all immediately, to set schedules, and if you do that, just don’t respect them: enjoy the food, the wine, people around you, the view, LIFE.

You will then have all the time to discover Bondi Beach, Australia’s most famous beach.

A walk along all the coast will get you from Bondi to Coogee (unfortunately we couldn’t do it entirely as it was interrupted, since bad weather caused unbelievable damages even there). If you are lucky, Marks Park, the first park along the Coastal Walk, is a perfect point to spot migrating whales, especially during the pick of june-july.

I want to finish the description of my itinerary with a Baz Luhrmann’s quotation, who described Sydney as:

“Sydney is rather like an arrogant lover. When it rains it can deny you its love and you can find it hard to relate to. It's not a place that's built to be rainy or cold. But when the sun comes out, it bats its eyelids, it's glamorous, beautiful, attractive, smart, and it's very hard to get away from its magnetic pull.”

And it is true, it’s precisely like this.

When it rains, Sydney looks like a city as many others, but when the rain stops a new world opens behind the clouds. A world made of wine glasses in the open air, breakfasts with a view and endless nights.

Because if there is something I love about Sydney (and about Australia) is the chance and the willing of anyone to enjoy the day, enjoy all the moments, without the rush to do something else after, only thinking about the here and now, and taking the most from every instant.

Back home for Christmas
