Best Burgers in Brussels

Una delle cose che preferisco mangiare fuori sono gli hamburger. E devo dire che a Bruxelles ci sono vari posti in cui gli hamburger sono veramente buoni.
1. Sicuramente uno dei migliori è Elly’s Burger, una catena che ha vari ristoranti: uno a Sainte Catherine, uno a Place Jourdan, uno a Place Flagey…il mio preferito credo sia quello di Place Flagey, mentre l’ultima volta non abbiamo avuto la migliore esperienza a Place Jourdan. Arriviamo, siamo 13 persone, e già storcono un po’ il naso. Iniziamo a ordinare e io ordino, come sempre da Elly’s, un Cheese and Bacon senza cetriolino e senza salse. La ragazza mi ferma e mi dice: “No guarda, siete 13 persone, non potete cambiare i panini: se tu lo vuoi senza cetriolino e senza salse, è più facile se li facciamo tutti senza”. Io cerco di spiegarle che molto probabilmente, e lecitamente, qualcuno degli altri vorrà le salse o il cetriolino nel panino, e che nel caso ci sarà sempre qualcuno che non vorrà la cipolla, o il pomodoro, etc. Lei mi dice che se ognuno dovesse richiedere una modifica, in cucina si ritroverebbero una comanda lunghissima e sarebbe troppo complicato (?!). Alla fine raggiungiamo un compromesso e riusciamo ad ordinare ognuno il suo panino. Ovviamente qualcuno lo sbagliano, ma succede sempre. Finche’ non metteranno il cetriolino nel mio panino li perdonerò.
2. Les Superfilles du tram
Sempre a Place Flagey si trova un altro dei migliori hamburger di Bruxelles. Con uno stile un po’ differente, meno “commerciale”, un locale piccolo, con un’atmosfera piuttosto intima e con hamburger più “rustici”. Tra l’altro come aperitivo servono del pane con paté’ di olive, come se già l’hamburger di per sé non fosse abbastanza.
3. Be Burger
Un’altra catena, che ha un ristorante anche a Zaventem, a 10 minuti dall’ufficio di Toyota e che rientra decisamente tra i migliori.
Una delle particolarità, tra l’altro, è la possibilità di ordinare, invece delle tradizionali patatine fritte, quelle fatte con patate dolci.
4. Manhattan
Il mio programma preferito della domenica è: gelato da Les Dodi (a Merode) + cena a Manhattan.
Ed il peggio livello di tossico dipendenza da hamburger l’abbiamo raggiunto io e Simo quando, un mesetto fa, siamo andati un sabato pomeriggio a prendere un gelato da Australian Ice-cream, una catena di gelati che qui va alla grande (sto ancora cercando di capire come mai, perché per il prezzo di un cono lì ti ci compri una vaschetta al supermercato, che è pure meglio) e poi da Manhattan; e il giorno seguente abbiamo ripetuto, con la unica differenza che siamo passati al gelato vero di Les Dodi.
Questi sono quelli in cui io vado più spesso: non metto in dubbio ce ne siano altri, e di sicuro ce ne sono molti che io ancora non ho nemmeno scoperto. Anzi, se avete sono decisamente ben accette, sto ancora cercando il mio Andrew’s (il ristorante di hamburger in cui mangiavo almeno una volta a settimana a Melbourne, quella credo sia stata la più forte dipendenza della mia vita, insieme a quella per i frozen yogurt) a Bruxelles!
One of the things that I like the most is burgers. And I have to say that in Brussels there are several burger places that are really really good.
1. Definitely one of the best is Elly’s Burger, a chain with quite few restaurants: one in Sainte Catherine, one in Place Jourdan, one in Place Flagey…I think my favourite is the one in Place Flagey, whereas last time we didn’t have the best experience in Place Jourdan. We arrived, 13 people, and they were already turning their noses up. We started to order: I ordered first and asked, as always, a cheese and bacon with no pickle and no sauce. The waitress stopped me and said: “Well, no. If you are 13 people you cannot change the burgers: if you want it without pickle and without sauce, then let’s say that we do all the burger with no pickle and no sauce”. I tried to explain her that most likely, and legitimately, someone else would want the sauce or the pickle in his burger, and that in any case there will always be someone who doesn’t eat onion or tomato or whatever. She then said that if everyone should request an amendment, in the kitchen they would have a super long order, and it would be too complicated (?!). At the end, we reached an agreement and we ordered the burger at everyone’s liking. Obviously some were wrong, but that always happens. I will forgive them for that, until they will put pickle in my burger.
2. Les Superfilles du tram
Always in Place Flagey you can find another of the best burger places of Brussels. With a style a little different, less “commercial”: a smaller place, with a rather intimate atmosphere and with more “rustic” burgers. Besides, as aperitif they serve bread with olives paté, as if the burger itself was not enough!
3. Be Burger
Another franchise, with also one restaurant in Zaventem, 10 minutes from Toyota Head office. And that definitely is among the best ones.
One peculiarity, besides, is the possibility to order, instead of traditional French fries, sweet potatoes fries.
4. Manhattan
My favorite Sunday plan is: ice-cream at Les Dodi (in Merode) + dinner at Manhattan.
We reached the highest level of burger-addiction about one month ago. Simo and I went, on a Saturday afternoon, to have an ice-cream at Australian Ice-cream, a chain that is really huge here (I am still trying to understand why, as for the price of an ice-cream cone there, you get a whole bowl at the supermarket, and it’s even better) and then we went to Manhattan. The following day we did exactly the same, only difference we switched to real ice-cream at Les Dodi. But 2/2 at Manhattan is definitely an healthy lifestyle.
These are the 4 I go more often to: I have no doubt there are more, and many I haven’t even discovered yet. Indeed, if you have any recommendation and advice, I am really open. In Brussels, I am still looking for my Andrew’s (the burger place in Melbourne I was going at least once a week to; I think that was the strongest addiction of my life, together with the one for frozen yogurts)!
