English Version Below -
An Italian statement says: "Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever you want". And for several reasons I decided not to go back home for Easter Holidays.
I replaced it with an unconventional program, that we nicknamed "Castles tour".
First of all, we closed the work week with a pizza at "La pizza è Bella", which inspires no trust by the name, but it's actually really good: I would say one of the best pizza places in Brussels.
Saturday morning, Simo and I left heading for the Castle of Laarne, about thirty minutes far from Gent. As it's open to visits exclusively on Sundays, we only visited it from the outside. It might be the grayness, the fog or the fact that there was no human being at distance of kilometers, but the atmosphere was quite creepy. That actually increased the charme of the castle and of the surrounding landscape.
After the short visit, we headed for the Ooidonk Castle, 20 minutes far from Kasteel Laarne.
In front of the castle there was a local fair with several stands and stalls: the ticket to enter the market was 8.50 euro, plus the ticket to visit the castle. We couldn't care less about the fair, and we skipped the visit.
So, we only visited from the outside even the second castle, this one not even closely.
As it was already getting late, we headed for Gent, where we made an appointment with a friend of us come by bike from Brussels. We had a tour in the city centre, explored the Patersol, one of the most characteristic neighborhood of Gent, proceeded along the canal, then we went back to the Gravensteen, the castle in Gent city centre, considered one of the most beautiful of all Belgium.
We picked the car up and left to Brussels, going the wrong way a couple of times and stopping by Delhaize (one of the main chains of supermarkets here) to look for our Kinder Easter egg, which will become our obsession and nightmare for the following days.
Obviously Delhaize shut the door on our face, and we came back home disconsolate.
Easter Sunday, Day 2 of our "Castles tour", which moved in direction of Bruges.
We started with the Castle of Tillegem: in the middle of the park of the same name. We left the car in a parking and we walked for 10/15 minutes. The castle's surrounded by a moat and a perfectly studied symmetries garden separates it from the park.
We "circumnavigated" the castle, which is not possible to visit inside (permanent feature of the castles of our tour apparently), but offering anyway a really suggestive scenery.
The second stop was the super close Castle of Tudor, nothing special despite the fact that it is surrounded by a beautiful forest. Our reaction was a little like the penguins of Madagascar when arriving in Antartica: "This sucks!".
The third stop was the Kruispoort, one of the old doors of the town, where we left the car to start a city tour. Actually, from there we started a quite weird tour: we followed an itinerary recommended on the Lonely Planet Guide around the St-Anna neighborhood, not particularly nice apart from the windmills, that are always charming for someone coming from outside Belgium.
Once finished the tour, we had a tea-break in a cafe in the old town. Then, we walked for a couple of hours around the picturesque canals of Bruges, admiring its picture-postcard landscapes. At 7 pm, we took the car back from the parking and we went back to Brussels, we tried again to find the Easter egg, but we failed again, miserably. Nothing to do: this Kinder egg is not going to happen.
