Full of history: in any building, in any house, in any tile. Centuries of culture and art passing behind our feet and in front of our eyes; mixing with shops, crowded bars, with the multitude of people pouring into the streets every day.
Going up from the sea towards Plaça Catalunya: delimited at the left by the Rambla, at the right by Via Laietana: it's enough to turn in whatever tiny street leaving from the Rambla to get lost in a maze of streets and squares mixing in a knot of history, food, culture, art, nightlife and wonderful sunsets.
The Cathedral is one of the unmissable things in Barcelona. Begun in the 13th century and finished in the 19th, it's a gothic and neogothic masterpiece: from outside majestic and awe-inspiring, highly decorated; with big windows inside that illuminate with natural light a wide central nave and two aisles.
The various squares enhancing the Gothic quarter, from Jaume 1 to Plaça Sant Felipe Neri, whose church still bears the marks of the executions done by the troops of Franco and those of the bombings of 1945; to the beautiful Plaça Reial, where rules the contrast between fancy restaurants surrounding it, pitchmen (in theory selling beer, then...), the market for collectors of Sunday morning and clubs full every night.
The soul of Barcelona. That wakes up late, but enjoys the day: eating, drinking and filling up the streets with party and colors. And goes to bed only when it's already morning.
