How to work in Spain: Social Security Number
sabato, giugno 03, 2017
I had been told: "To work in Spain you must have the NIE, the Foreign Identity Number: with that document you can work without any problem". I had been told.
When I had been offered a job for an event, actually I had been asked for the NIE, but also for the Numero de Seguridad Social (the Social Security Number).
And lost a job because I didn't have time to get it (it was Friday and the event started on Tuesday, and Monday was public holiday), I had been offered another one on Tuesday, for the following weekend.
On Wednesday, I went to the Oficina de Seguridad Social (Social Security Office) closer to my place. I queued, and when it was my turn I said I had to register to have the Social Security Number. The employee (I wonder why I always find the most capable ones) told me that to give me the number I have to provide an employment contract.
But, if without the employment contract they don't give you the Social Security Number, and if without the Social Security Number no one is going to employ you, how can you do it?!
Actually, the day after I went to another office. There, they told me that I didn't need a contract of employment. I only needed the firm who wanted to hire me to put a stamp on my papers, to express the willing to employ me. But in that office they couldn't give me the number: I could only get it in my jurisdiction. Of course it was the first I went to.

Lost also the second job, I am still here, without the Social Security and without a job, stuck in the bureaucratic machine of some country.
But with the NIE you can work with no problem, they said.
