English Version Below - Ci sono città, come Lisbona, in cui non puoi che amare uscire la sera. E vorresti poterlo fare ogni giorno. Vorresti avere più tempo libero per uscire ogni sera, andare al Bairro, poi a ballare, incontrare mille persone e fare l’alba.

E poi ci sono città in cui esci la sera e continui a guardare l’orologio, aspettando che si faccia abbastanza tardi per tornare a casa. Questo è quello che mi è successo la prima sera a Pattaya, e anche la seconda, e la terza e la quarta.

Le discoteche a Pattaya sono gratis, ma con l’obbligo di consumazione per il gruppo (cosa di cui ci siamo accorte solo dopo la sesta serata), nel senso che c’è gente in giro che controlla che almeno qualcuno nel gruppo abbia bevuto, e se non bevi ti invitano gentilmente ad andartene. Bere nei club o bar, però, costa sui 200 Baht, e tenendo conto che il nostro stipendio era di 2000, se potevamo evitavamo.  Ma anche comprare da bere e stare a casa non è poi così economico, visto che tutti prodotti di importazione (come sono sì cereali, pasta e yogurt, ma anche vino e vodka) costano un occhio della testa.

La via principale in cui andare a ballare è Walking Street, la Khaosan Road di Pattaya. Dove si trovano tutti i bar, gli strip club, le bancarelle e le discoteche. E non c’è neanche bisogno di dirlo, lì si vede di tutto. Pattaya è la capitale del turismo sessuale in Thailandia, e Walking Street ne è il centro nevralgico. Per questo sicuramente ti fermeranno almeno 10 persone per chiederti se vuoi assistere ad un Ping-pong show, probabilmente ti verrà chiesto se sei una prostituta, e diversi uomini di mezz’età ti offriranno da bere o di ballare. E per quanto la Thailandia sia sicura, chiaramente non puoi comportarti qui come a casa. Non ti fidare assolutamente di accettare da bere da qualche sconosciuto, a diverse ragazze è capitato di prendere da bere con le persone sbagliate e risvegliarsi senza ricordarsi assolutamente niente.

I migliori club a mio parere sono il Mixx, l’Insomnia (anche se non c’erano troppe ragazze nei 15 minuti in cui siamo state lì, anzi probabilmente noi eravamo le uniche), il Brooklyn e pochi altri, dove la musica e la clientela sono prettamente internazionali e dove è possibile divertirsi senza venire assillate da troppe persone. Ma se c’è una cosa che si allontana completamente da questo tipo di ambiente sono i rooftop bar: di classe, eleganti, con piscine a strapiombo sulla città e con una quiete che lascia di Walking Street solo un lontano ricordo, e che dà a Pattaya una dimensione ed un’aria completamente diverse.

Certo, chi dovesse andare a Pattaya in vacanza e con un’ottica orientata esclusivamente al divertimento avrebbe una percezione assolutamente diversa, probabilmente avrebbe solo l’idea di una città che sicuramente è pazza, con ogni tipo di divertimento, e dove si ha la possibilità di conoscere ogni tipo di persona, dal backpacker che vuole esplorare uno dei posti più caratteristici e particolari del pianeta, al 60enne occidentale in cerca di moglie (quando va bene), al locale che cerca di contrattare per il prezzo di qualsiasi cosa venda, ma sempre con il sorriso.
Che poi, il sorriso della gente è ancora la cosa più bella che io abbia visto a Pattaya.

There are cities, like Lisbon, where you can just love to go out at night. And you wish you could do that every day. You wish you had more free time to go out every night, go to the Bairro, then to clubs, meet thousands of people and laugh until the sunshine.

And then, there are cities where you go out at night and you keep on looking at the time, hoping to be late enough to come back home. This is what happened to me the first night in Pattaya, and the second, and the third, and the forth.

Clubs in Pattaya are free, but with drink purchase required for at least one person in any group of people (thing we realized only after few nights), meaning that there are security guards around checking at least someone drank and, if not, they kindly you ask you to go out. Drinking in clubs or bars, though, costs around Baht 200, and considering that our salary was Baht 2,000, if we could we avoided. But even buy stuff to drink at home is not that cheap, since all the importation products (as cereals, pasta, yogurt, but also wine and vodka) cost an arm and a leg.

The main street to go clubbing is Walking Street, the Khaosan Road of Pattaya. Where all the bars, strip clubs, stands and clubs are. And there’s no need to say that there you can literally see everything. Pattaya is the capital of sexual tourism in Thailand, and Walking Street is the nerve center. For this reason at least 10 people will surely stop you to ask you if you want to watch a ping pong show, probably you’ll be asked if you are a prostitute, and several middle-aged men will offer you a drink or ask you to dance. And, no matter how safe Thailand is, clearly you can’t behave here as at home. Don’t ever accept a drink from any stranger, some girls girls got drinks with the wrong people, and woke up the morning after remembering nothing at all.

The clubs I preferred are the Mixx, the Insomnia (even if there weren’t many girls the 15 minutes we were there, actually we were probably the only ones), the Brooklyn, and other few, where the music and the clientele are mostly international and where you can have fun without being harassed by too many people. But if there is a thing that completely drifts apart from this kind of environment is the rooftops: classy, elegant, with overhanging on the city pools and with a quiet that leaves only a far memory of Walking Street, and that gives to Pattaya a completely different dimension and vibe.

For sure, who goes to Pattaya on holiday and with a fun-oriented mindset would have a totally different perception, he would probably only have the idea of a city which is surely crazy, with any source of fun, and where there is the chance to meet literally every kind of person, from the backpacker who wants to explore one of the most distinguishing and characteristic spots on the planet, to the 60-years-old man looking for a wife (hopefully…), to the local who tries to bargain for whatever he is selling, but always with a smile.
That then, people’s smile is still the best thing I’ve seen in Pattaya.
